Croatia to Italy – day 33 (Verona and broken down hire car)

Today we travelled to Italy!!! We stopped in Verona on the way to eat lunch and it was very nice.

We saw Romeo and Juliet’s balcony and also an ice cream shop called Mr. Dick!!

There was so many designer shops too, Dad said this is the most expensive city in the WORLD!!!

We walked back to the car and I saw a very attractive boy. I looked absolutely ridiculous in Dads T-shirt so I wasn’t very happy.

We drove to our new campsite, near Lecco on Lake Como, and went to bed – we have a mobile home this time, not a tent! Yay!

At 3am mum and Dad got woken up to go rescue Caitlyn, Gvido and Grandma Susan THAT GOT STUCK in the nearby mountains in their hire car, which was now broken!!! Caitlyn was crying hysterically saying it was dark and she was scared, but they saw a wolf and everything! Gvido was scaring all the animals away not with his voice, with his looks..

They were in the middle of nowhere and had driven down a very steep, rocky incline. The Google maps told them to go that way, but it led to a dead-end!! Gvido did a 57 point turn to turn around, but it was so steep and rocky that the car wouldn’t go back up the hill!!! They burnt out the clutch and now it was broken!!

Mum was asking Caitlyn to calm down and download ‘what three words’. This made Caitlyn more hysterical because she thought mum was trying to distract her with a word search or something, but it is actually an app which allows you to pinpoint your exact location to the nearest metre! Caitlyn was hysterically telling mum they were miles from the nearest driveable road and Grandma Susan couldn’t walk!

Anyway, we eventually managed to rescue them, but they all ( including Grandma Susan!!) had to walk for 2 and a half hours first! Mum drove down a road that she wasn’t really supposed to drive on when Caitlyn rang to say Grandma Susan couldn’t walk any further and they were having to stop every 30 seconds for a rest. The walk was all up hill, in the pitch black, also they were scared of being attacked by wilderbeasts who live in the forest in Italy! So they were all very relieved when they saw the Volvos headlights approaching!

Gvido had been a great help, carrying all of the bags and helping Grandma Susan sit down when she needed to.

Also, mum had to drive for the first time this holiday on the opposite side of the road. This was very stressful, mostly for dad.

Everybody got to bed for 6am – it was morning but still pitch black! Tomorrow, we will need to sort out the abandoned hire car!

I’m Alice. I started writing about my holidays when I was 6. I’m 11 now. I love art, photography and travelling. So far, I have been to many parts of Italy (by plane and car) many Greek Islands, Morocco and Thailand. Last summer, we drove to Slovenia and Croatia and camped. Next year I hope to visit Japan and go skiing.

  1. What a day and night that was!!!! How difficult for everyone. I think you’ll remember this holiday for the storms, floods, and people getting stuck. Go somewhere safer next year.
